What takes a group performance to the next level for you?

I become excited when I see a group of dancers that are so well rehearsed and confident with their steps and technique, that they are able to focus their entire performance on communicating the story. Unifying a team, but aware of each other’s significance within the dance, they succeed in sharing a clear intention with the audience and moving as an ensemble.

What makes a performance stand out for you?

When a dancer can take the choreography they have been given and perform it as if it is their own. Connecting each step organically and being present within each moment.

What qualities do you specifically look for in performances?

Were the dancers present, honest and/or inhibited? Was the overall dance routine entertaining?

Are there any special tips you would give to first time contestants?

You have put in the rehearsal work, so when it’s show time, enjoy being on stage! Have fun and remember we are cheering you on! We want you to succeed!

What are you looking for in duo/trio/group routines?

Relationship is key to any successful duet or trio. Who is the person/s you are dancing with and what is your relationship with them in the performance? It is important to acknowledge your partner/s while on stage and connect throughout the entire piece.

What should every dancer be thinking or remember every time they’re performing?

Every dancer should be thinking about the intention of their dance and being present during their performance. What are you trying to communicate to the audience? Remember dance is an art form which is a medium for artistic expression. We want to be moved! We want to be entertained!
